The development of technology is so rapid that it can sometimes be cruel...
When I was little, my dad brought me my very first phone, which was a BlackBerry. Back then, it was a symbol of status. I was so proud of it that I started adding people, even random ones, to my BlackBerry Messenger, or BBM for short. So, what is BBM?
Launched in August 2005 by Research In Motion (RIM), BlackBerry Messenger was a giant; it was a revolution! Before BBM, mobile communication was dominated by SMS. Simple, slow, and expensive. You paid per message, couldn’t tell if it was received, and there was a character limit. Group chats didn’t exist, and it was not possible to share photos, videos, or voice messages.
When BBM came out, it wasn’t just a new way to text. It was a cultural shift, a sign that communication was evolving fast. It can be personalized by adding unique profile pictures and status to show people your quirks :3 BBM made texting smarter, faster, and more human.
So, how did this king meet his downfall? BBM was exclusively for BlackBerry users. What was once an advantage of security and exclusivity turned into a double-edged sword. BBM stayed locked to BlackBerry devices for too long. They couldn't adapt to the rapid development of technology (touchscreen) which was dominated by iPhones and androids. After years of exclusivity, BlackBerry finally released BBM for iOS and Android in October 2013. This was a huge move. For the first time, users didn't need a BlackBerry device to use BBM. However, it was too late. By then, WhatsApp and other apps had already taken the throne. People had moved on. Eventually, by May 2019, BBM officially shut down, and it became a dead media.. TT
Although this legend has failed to survive the journey, it will never be truly dead. BBM has laid the foundation for social media today! Remember the old PING!!!, the classic D and R marks for delivered and read, BBM might be dead, but it will never be forgotten, especially for millennials..
Rest in peace... :'D
Oh yes! the Blackberry! We thought it would last forever!!
