Mid-Term Long Form Assignment - July 7, 2025

Imagine being forbidden to see your lover for an entire year, just because you love them so much that you neglected your duties.. Suffocating..

Well, that is the story behind the Tanabata festival (Star festival), which is celebrated on either July 7th (Gregorian calendar) or August 7th (Lunisolar calendar), depending on the region. Meaning.. You can celebrate it twice by going to a different region :D/

It originated from an ancient Chinese legend, where during early summer, two constellations, Vega and Altair, could see each other by passing the Milky Way. These constellations are believed to be a couple. Legends say that there once lived a beautiful princess called Orihime (represented by the constellation Vega), the daughter of the sky King. Orihime dedicated her life weaving brautiful faabrics, but she was lonely. Moved by his daughter's sadness, the King arranged for her to meet Hikoboshi (represented by the constellation Altair), a cowherd on the other side of the Milky Way. It was love at first sight.. :3

They were so deeply in love that they neglected their duties. Orihime stopped weaving, and Hikoboshi let his cows roam free. Enraged, the Sky King separated the two, allowing them to meet only once a year, on the seventh day of the seventh month, if Orihime diligently does her weaving.. T^T at least they were given a chance to meet each other.

Nowadays,  people celebrate the Tanabata festival by writing their wishes or poems on colorful papers and hanging them on bamboo trees, which is believed to be able to ward off evil. On top of that, they grow straight and tall, so they carry your wishes to the heavens! People even competed to hang their wishes on the topmost of the bamboo trees :D At the end of the festival, people dispose of the bamboos along with the wishes by either floating them onto a river or burning them. This symbolizes that their wishes are being sent to heaven, hoping they will be granted.

There are also festivals, and beautiful origami hanging along the street. People wear kimonos and eat delicious food! It is also believed to be a day to wish for good sewing and agriculture.

Today is the day.. What are you waiting for? Go and wish your heart out, and who knows.. Maybe it will come true :D Enjoy! Sadly, I have a meeting after this, so I don't have any plans for the festival.. :( I think it is such a beautiful and colorful festival and I wish I could participate one day :D/ If I were to wish for anything.. right now I just want to get a stable job and live a stable life.. :'D
